Suppose it was your last hour! What would you be doing? Suppose it was your last hour! What would be your greatest priority and choice? Suppose it was your last hour! What would be your preparation? If it were your last hour, what a flurry of anxious preparations there would be! But let me tell you, it is the last hour!
“Little children, it is the last hour…” (1 John 2:18). If a thousand year is like a day before God, then life generally on earth can just be described as the last second of the last hour! If anybody thought they had only 60 minutes left, they would certainly not spend the time on trivialities. With the microsecond running out like fine sand in an hourglass, they would see what was really important to them. They would not go shopping for the latest fashionable hat or run an eye down the financial columns to see how their shares were doing. Neither would they settle down carelessly discussing the politics of the day. But unfortunately, people live as though this life were a permanent arrangement. The Bible message is that our days are “numbered”- not numberless. There is actually only time for the important things.
The one thing we know is that we don’t know how near we are to the end. It is obvious, however, that we are much closer to the end every day. How long can the last hour last? Nobody knows! This is the more reason why you must give the uttermost attention to the most important things of your life.
At the last hour, the preoccupation of every reasonable man ought to be the survival of his life. For what shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul? It is foolishness of a superlative degree if at the last hour a man is found still walking and working about having not settled the question of his eternal destiny! You are a spirit in the garb of the mortal body which has its expiry date! It is the last hour! The body is fast to becoming dust from which it was taken. The spirit will return to its Giver to receive the judgment sentence of eternal life or eternal death, depending on the life lived in the body. It is the last hour. Life is very short. But have you settled the question of your eternal destiny? Whatever you are occupied with now at the expense of your eternal life will not follow you beyond this earth. “For we brought NOTHING into this world, and we can take NOTHING out of it.” Money, marriage, academic degree, pleasure, etc. everything will pass away with this world. “But this I say, brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none; and they that weep, as though they wept not; and they that rejoice, as though they rejoiced not; and they that buy, as though they possessed not; and they that use this world, as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth away” (1 Cor.7:29-31).
Since you are definitely going to outlive the sun, it is wise to make choices that will place you correctly in eternity. Living in this world is but a step or passage into eternity. Your present existence is only a passage into real life. Your real life begins the moment you step across the bridge from this world into eternity. Your present existence is only to make you prepare for your placement in eternity. Everyman is given a chance to live in this world where change can occur so that he can by himself make a choice of his placement in eternity where there will be no change! 70 years of existence in this world are but a preparation to enter eternity, where time and years do not matter.
Maybe It would have been better if it was possible to make my choices when I get to eternity for a correct placement in eternity, unfortunately, once you step into eternity, you cannot change your mood, location or choice. Choices are not made there. The moment you step over into eternity, you automatically lose your power of choice. There is no change there. Any choice you do not make while you are here on earth can never ever be made again.
The wages of sin is eternal death. But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ. If your life is not yet right with God, you must pause here for a very sober reflection. Christ stands at the door of your heart this day, knocking. Do not delay in rising to open for Him to come in and by His Blood blot out all the records of sins that the devil is compiling against you to pull you into eternal perdition. There is forgiveness now; there will be none in eternity. There is repentance now in time, but there is nothing like that in eternity. There is cleansing in the blood today, but there all stains are permanent. Take the advantage of time today and never bank on a “tomorrow” that may never be yours. Today is the accepted time, today is the day of salvation. Your decision today may place you eternally in a wrong place. Bow your heart now in prayer and ask Him Who is willing to forgive you and give you eternal life to come into your life. Waiting too long to repent, you might not repent too soon. And you don’t know when it will be too late for you to repent because you don’t know how long the last hour can last!
