THE YEARS OF LIFE AND THE YEARS OF PILGRIMAGE.
Jacob was in the later years of his life when he appeared before Pharaoh the king of Egypt. When Pharaoh saw Jacob, the first question he asked him was “How old are you?”. Perhaps the question was prompted by the aging appearance of Jacob. Now I am not as concerned about the reason behind the question as I am with the response of Jacob. The answer of Jacob to the question of Pharaoh is a serious matter to look into as it gives a deep insight into understanding life and the purpose for living. “How old are you?” Pharaoh asked Jacob.
And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage. Gen. 47:9
In this answer of Jacob, he made us understand that life is actually measured by two calendars, The Years of Life & The Years of Pilgrimage. And the two are different though bound up in one life. Jacob answered Pharaoh by telling him the two “Years” of his life which actually is the years of everyone on Earth.
The year of Pilgrimage is the chronological year or the calendar year. This is measured in number. For Jacob, his year of Pilgrimage was one hundred and thirty years. But The year of life is not measured in number. This is the year of purpose fulfillment; the years of impactful living. It is measured by life’s achievements. While the years of pilgrimage is measured by DURATION, the years of life is measured by DONATION. The year of pilgrimage is the container of life while the years of life is the content of life that life should discharge.
Now there is another correlation between these two years summed up in one life. And this is it: The year of Pilgrimage is actually given to FULFILL the years of life. At the expiration of the years of Pilgrimage, God expects that the years of life will have been fulfilled. The implication of this is that you are not a purposeless creature. There is a reason for your existence. There is something very important that your life is meant to accomplish on Earth. Your birth is the evidence that God has a purpose for your life because He produces every product on purpose. Necessity, they say, is the mother of invention. In like manner, PURPOSE is the REASON for your EXISTENCE. And to live the chronological years without fulfilling purpose is to live a WASTED life. This is because PURPOSE IS GREATER THAN LIFE. It’s because of purpose that life was given. How long you live on earth is NOT as important as how impactful and effective your life is.
Now, while it is God’s expectation that the years of Pilgrimage should fulfill the years of life, sad enough, this is NOT always so for the majority of people on Earth! Many people just exist without living. Many have squandered the years of pilgrimage without fulfilling the years of life. Seventy, eighty or even a hundred years have been squandered without profit. What a wasted life! It’s why someone has said that the richest place on earth is the grave. Why? It’s full of many untapped potentials. It is full of many unfilled purposes. It is full of many unwritten books and many undone deeds. Friend! PURPOSE IS THE FIRST THING THAT BROUGHT YOU TO THE WORLD, IT IS THE LAST THING YOU WILL GIVE ACCOUNT OF!
Have you discovered what your life is expected to fulfill? Now that you are already existing on earth, have you discovered the reason why God sent you here? Are you currently doing the work of destiny? How many years of your Pilgrimage have you spent in fulfilling the years of your life? Life becomes a waste when it is not lived to fulfill the purpose for which it was given. And more sobering is the fact that your years of pilgrimage is numbered! You don’t have all eternity to live. Years of life can only be fulfilled within the duration of the years of pilgrimage. Years of pilgrimage has an expiration date. It’s why Jesus said, “I must do the works of Him that sent me while it is day; the night cometh, when no man can work”.
This is a serious matter to consider! The search for purpose ought to be the ultimate search in your heart right now. And I need to let you know that you cannot discover or fulfill your purpose without a connection with your Maker. For BY Him and FOR Him all things were created. And the ONLY CONNECTION TO YOUR MAKER IS THROUGH HIS SON JESUS CHRIST! “We look at the Son and the God who cannot be seen. We look at the Son and see God’s original purpose in everything created. For everything, absolutely everything above and below, visible and invisible, rank after rank after rank of angels- everything got started in Him and finds its purpose in Him” Please, read that again!
Irrespective of your achievements in this world, outside Jesus Christ, the best life can be is ABUSE! To live outside Him is to live in darkness. Jesus Christ is the Light that shows us our Maker and what He created us for. If you have no relationship with your Maker through His Son Jesus Christ, this is the right time to establish that crucial connection. For without Him, you can do nothing. Anything you think you are doing outside Him is actually NOTHING!
This is my prayers for you as I have prayed for myself:
May the Lord be merciful unto you!
May the years of your Pilgrimage fulfill the years of your life.
May you fully discover the purpose of your existence in life
May the Lord deliver you from wasters of both the years of life and pilgrimage
May your years of Pilgrimage count for the years of life!
May the grace and mercy of the Cross of Jesus make up for any wasted years!
Watch out for part 2.
